Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva announced Saturday that he has launched consultations with the United States, China and India to salvage world trade talks.

and would speak with Chinese counterpart Hu Jintao next week at the Olympic Games. Marathon talks on a new global trade pact collapsed in Geneva on Tuesday as the United States and India refused to compromise over a proposal to help poor farmers deal with floods of imports. Lula said he believes the Doha Round of trade negotiations could still be concluded after elections in the United States and India.
